A practical gel lighting workshop

Coloured light is everywhere right now, from music videos to fashion editorials. When you see the finished photo it looks simple. Then you put a gel on a flash for the first time and realise there’s a lot more to it than picking a nice colour.
That’s why we put this workshop together. On Sunday 22 November we’re opening our studio in Platen for an afternoon of shooting with gels: one model, four lighting setups, and most of the time spent behind the camera rather than listening to theory.
How the afternoon works
We start at half past one with a coffee and a quick look at the gear. Then we build the first setup together. While we set it up, we explain what you need to watch out for when working with gels: where the lights go, how to keep the colours clean, how to get the exposure right. Then it’s your turn to shoot. Everyone works with every setup, and we stay right next to you when something doesn’t look the way you want it to.
The four setups
Over the afternoon we work through four different lighting setups. Each one shows a different style of working with colour, from subtle to bold, so you go home with a varied set of images and not four versions of the same photo.
Who it’s for?
You should know your camera well enough to shoot in manual mode. That’s really all. You don’t need your own flashes or gels and you don’t need studio experience. We have the lights, gels, triggers and the haze machine here.
We also run Shaping the Light, our introduction to studio lighting, the Saturday before, on 14 November. The two go well together, but you can of course book just one of them.
What you go home with
Your own photos from four different setups, so some fresh work for your portfolio. After the workshop we also send you a PDF guide with the basics of gel lighting, so you can go back over everything and build the setups again in your own space.
The details
We keep the group to five so everyone gets proper time behind the camera, which means places go fast. You can book on our website (see here below the picture) or just send us a message.

Please note that after your registration you receive an invoice for a deposit of 65 € which is non-refundable if you cancel after November 10th 2026. The remaining amount will be invoiced before the workshop and has to be fully paid until 18 November 2026.
We reserve the right to cancel the workshop if we have less than 4 participants. In that case we will of course refund all paid amounts.
